Orientation to Monterey Bay

The Monterey Bay region encompasses several smaller cities that collectively make up the area known as “Monterey Bay”. These cities are Monterey, Carmel By the Sea, Carmel Valley, Pacific Grove, Seaside and Moss Landing. For the sake of visiting the region and focusing on the main sights and attractions the following cities are the primary draw: Monterey, Pacific Grove and Carmel By the Sea.

Getting to Monterey Bay

Monterey Bay is located about 120 miles south of San Francisco and 330 miles north of Los Angeles. Most visitors to the region arrive by car-usually from the San Francisco or Los Angeles area although a healthy percentage also arrive by air through the Monterey Peninsula Airport. To a lesser extent many arrive via tour bus-usually from San Francisco.

Safety in Monterey Bay

Monterey Bay without a doubt is one of the safest areas in all of California if not the entire United States. With its main communities (Monterey, Carmel By the Sea and Pacific Grove) exuding small town feels with a vibe that makes one feel like they are at New England coastal retreat it is easy to feel safe and comfortable. Aside from the low crime issue for locals, most of Monterey’s sights are spread out in picturesque settings only reached by car leaving very few opportunities for unfortunate situations.

Weather in Monterey Bay

Contrary to popular belief, the weather in California-much like its geography is not created equal. That said Monterey Bay suffers from the reputation for being one of the coldest, overcast and at times wettest areas in the state. A trip to Monterey Bay mean planning accordingly in terms of what wear. Sweatshirts, jackets, and long pants are a must-often even in the summer.

When to Visit Monterey Bay

Monterey Bay is one of those seasonal destinations that has its high points and low points in terms of what time of year one visits. WIthout a doubt the best time to go to Monterey weather wise is between May and October. It is this time of year that the days are longer and there is very little-if any rain. Crowds are heavy during this time and on sunny days the traffic in and around Cannery Row and Carmel By the Sea can be quite heavy.
