The Union Square Hotel in San Francisco is located in the heart of the city’s Union Square district and is one of the more colorful exciting hotels for the value in the city. Located on Powell Street just steps from where cable cars arrive and depart for Fisherman’s Wharf, the area surrounding the hotel is full of glass high rises and large crowds walking the sidewalk in front of the property all day and night. This area of San Francisco is one of the most high trafficked zones with thousands of tourists in transit to either the cable car boarding area or sight seeing buses arriving and departing Union Square mixed with locals heading to and from work along Market Street. The hotel is about a 10 minute walk to Chinatown, North Beach and Nob Hill. Visitors looking to get to Fisherman’s Wharf can board a cable car right outside the front door of the hotel (although that can be an hour wait). The hotel is also less than a 5 minute walk to Market Street where antique street cars take travelers on a 15 minute journey to Fisherman’s Wharf and BART trains depart every 5-7 minutes for San Francisco International Airport and to Berkley and Oakland in the east bay. The hotel hosts 131 rooms, including 29 executive rooms and 2 private suites, each with their own sundeck.
The Union Square Hotel is considered a boutique hotel. The view of the hotel from street level is somewhat mundane, in fact the hotel is easily disguised as its placed like a puzzle between two other buildings. However, once inside the full personality of the property comes to light. Each of the rooms is decorated in Art Deco with brick walls, mosaic murals and custom furnishings from EQ3 which is a San Francisco based furniture design gallery. Each bed is a platform bed and colors are mixed and matched to give a unique charm and relaxing perspective. In addition every room is geared towards business travelers with state of the art technology that include complimentary wireless internet service and ergonomic desks and chairs. Every room is equipped with flat screen TVs and ipod docking stations.
The actual building the hotel is housed in has been in existence since 1915 and has changed hands a few times over the years under different hotel names. The Union Square Hotel has been the current tenant since 1982 after being purchased by Personality Hotels in 1980.
Union Square Hotel is a solid three star accommodation that is steps from the center of Union Square and right on the cable car turn table.
